Why Health Equity Matters

Health equity is central to lifelong health and effective prevention. When policies, systems and services are designed to respond to diverse needs across life stages and social contexts, population health outcomes improve and disparities are reduced.

A LifeCourse approach recognizes that addressing health inequities early can prevent life-long consequences and reduce the burden on healthcare systems.

Why Equity Fails in Practice

Health inequities are the result of how systems function in practice. Even where there is commitment to equity, gaps persist because system design does not consistently support equitable access.

In practice, systems often assume equal access, while administrative complexity, rigid pathways, and limited coordination create barriers for underserved populations. These barriers shape how people experience services, influencing trust and engagement over time.

As a result, equity is often addressed only after disparities emerge, rather than being embedded in system design. This leads to persistent gaps in access and outcomes.

From Evidence to Implementation

Addressing these challenges requires a shift from isolated interventions to system-level change. Equity must be built into how policies are designed, how systems are organised, and how services are delivered.

This Learning Zone examines evidence-informed strategies to reduce healthcare disparities, with a focus on:

  • The role of universal health coverage and policy interventions
  • Social determinants of health and their impact across the life course
  • Culturally responsive and inclusive approaches to care
  • Innovative solutions to improve access for underserved populations

Drawing from science–policy dialogue and expert exchange, this Learning Zone explores how structural, social, and system-level barriers can be addressed through coordinated policy and prevention strategies across the lifecourse, making equitable access a real and measurable objective.

Resource Kits

The Learning Zone includes curated Resource Kits—collections of expert materials focused on key topics within the theme. These kits provide practical tools, insights, and evidence to support your work in advancing health prevention across the life course.

Resource Kit: Vaccination Equity

Ensuring equitable access to vaccination is a cornerstone of public health. Despite advancements in immunization programs, disparities in vaccine access persist across different communities and populations, influenced by socioeconomic factors, healthcare infrastructure, and misinformation.

The Vaccination Equity Resource Kit provides healthcare professionals, policymakers, and advocates with evidence-based strategies to bridge these gaps. Through data-driven insights, best practices, and policy recommendations, this kit supports efforts to ensure that vaccines reach every individual, regardless of their background or circumstances.
